Ugh! Going into Animal Care & Control is never a fun trip for rescuers. Yes, we get to save lives ... but it is a bittersweet experience because we leave so many others behind, knowing that most of those dogs will never walk out of there., So, how do we decide which dogs we are going to rescue? It's tough - no doubt about that. If there are many of one breed at the pound, we take that into consideration. If a dog is presenting as fearful and not showing well for the public, we factor that into our decision. We also must consider age and gender, based on kill-shelter population., The day we rescued Sticks, there were many many many male chihuahuas in the kennels (for some reason, Animal Care & Control always has alot of chihuahuas and pitbulls ... mostly because there are so many backyard breeders in Maricopa County). With many dogs just like him, little Sticks stood a strong chance of being overlooked by adopters for dogs of the same breed who were younger than he was., Sticks was also huddled in his kennel, scared out of his wits. Potential adopters just walked right by him on the way to kennels containing friskier little dogs. Poor Sticks didnt realize that his life literally depended on him behaving like a circus dog for people he didnt know. , Knowing that Sticks did not stand have a good chance of adoption, we rescued him. Once he got over his terror at having been abandoned, and realized that he was once again safe and loved, Sticks came out of his shell., He is a loving little dude and got his name because he has long gazelle-like legs. Sticks is a sweet boy and we have promised him he will never be homeless again. Come meet him!
