So, Laura and I went to Superior, AZ Animal Rescue to help them with some dogs. While we were there, we saw a pitbull puppy who was drawing the wrong kind of attention, i.e men who were looking for an unneutered pit (my "Michael Vick" radar was going off like gangbusters). Long story short, I rescued the pitbull and am now fostering him., Here's the deal: I have NEVER fostered a pitbull or a puppy, for that matter. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS IN FOR!! And I mean that in a good way. I immediately went out and bought "Pitbulls for Dummies." As a rescuer, I know that pure breds are full of specific character traits and behaviors. With a puppy, I wanted to hit the ground running with correct training., I learned that pitbull puppies are prone to chewing. SO TRUE! I learned that pitbull puppies like to dig. TRUE! I learned that pitbulls can be stubborn. OH BOY! But most importantly, I learned that pitbulls are extremely intelligent, affectionate creatures who want nothing more out of life than pleasing their humans. This nugget of wisdom is the most true thing I have ever read., So, pitbulls chew . . . the book said to redirect their focus to toys. I did this. Elvis learned what to chew and not to chew faster than I could drop that first toy. Pitbulls like to dig . . . the book said to channel energy by playing ball or taking the dog for a walk. Works like a charm!, And while Elvis can be stubborn when it comes to getting his attention sometimes, he never ever loses his sweet demeanor. He is a spectacular little guy who has brought so much to my life., I have learned so much from him., He is an easy pup to live with. I understand his baby behavior and know that he responds to training eagerly and quickly. Elvis now knows how to sit and stay. He is crate-trained. He is leash trained. He also knows that humans are not for biting when he plays. With the command "Kisses" he becomes a little lick monster! He knows that when he plays with humans, his contact is with sweet puppy dog kisses., Elvis is a pitbull which means he will thrive with structure and gentle discipline. Elvis is a puppy which means he is bouncy, happy and playful so he will need his energies properly channeled (However, he really isnt an overly-active dog and he knows not to jump on people). Elvis is also an incredibly sweet, intelligent little dog who will bring a lifetime of dedicated love to whoever is lucky enough to adopt him., He gets along with cats and dogs of all sizes.
